Starting Therapy

Wood Rings

Free Consultation

Some clients are eager to schedule their first session right away while others may be still in the process of exploring and trying to find a therapist that is right for them. I believe a good match is critical to the success of therapy, so I offer clients the opportunity to talk for briefly before deciding to schedule a full length meeting. During that time I can answer any questions about my approach to therapy, my background, training or anything else that will help you determine if you would like to start therapy with me. It is also a chance for us to discuss logistical topics like insurance, fees and scheduling.

How I work

The relationship between the psychologist and client is at the center of any therapeutic work, so early session focus on learning about you and how we can best work together and the particular concerns you want to concentrate on. I have a flexible approach to my work and there are a variety of methods I may use to help you with your specific needs. There are, however, some overarching values that guide my practice whether you are coming for individual, couples or family therapy.

First I take a holistic approach to therapy. I believe it is essential to take the person as a whole, and our work will include looking at the emotional, physical, spiritual and intellectual aspects of your life. This includes honoring and respecting different aspects of your identity including racial/cultural background, religious and spiritual life, family and personal history, sexual orientation and other cultural identities.

Second, I believe that relationships are essential to well-being. Developing trust can take time, and is an essential part of any healing or growth process.  Exploring our relationship is an important part of developing that trust and learning about your strengths and the obstacles you are trying to overcome. I believe in being clear, direct and transparent about how I am working and what I am thinking.

Finally I take an integrative approach to therapy. I know that each person I see is different. I have been trained in a range of therapeutic styles and take a flexible approach to my work. I will work collaboratively with you to come up with an approach that works for us both. I strive to take into account your current needs and all of the different aspects of your personal history.

During sessions, you can expect that I will want to hear about what is going on in your life, and ask questions about your history, experiences, thoughts feelings and perceptions. Under some circumstances, I may incorporate mindfulness techniques into our sessions and may also make suggestions about things you can work on between sessions.

Client Portal

Prior to the first session I will send you a link to a client portal where you will be able to review and fill out the paperwork necessary to begin therapy. The documents will include more information about my practice and policies.

Meeting

I provide sessions both in person and through telehealth via Zoom. We can discuss which option works best for you.

Fees and Insurance

Fees for different types of therapy are listed on the services page. I am not currently paneled with any insurance providers, but as a licensed psychologist in Washington State I can be billed out of network on many plans. Please contact your insurance to find out exactly what your coverage will be and feel free to ask me any questions. I do have a small number of sliding scale slots available for clients who may have difficulty affording therapy. Please let me know if this is something you would like to talk about.

Cancellations

I have a 48 hour cancellation policy and clients who miss sessions or cancel within the 48 hour time period will be charged for the session.
